2013 in Summary

I'm only a month and a half late with this, but as they say, "better late than never" :-)

So how was 2013 for me in terms of running? Absolutely bloody brilliant in the end.


I started the year off a little slowly. The weather wasn't very good and I wasn't particularly motivated after working the Christmas period having gotten back from visiting family in South Africa. What training I was doing was mostly the MAF approach with one session of Yasso 800s a week thrown in... the idea was to try and get a bit more speed in my legs in preparation for my first marathon in nearly 10 years. This served me well, or so I thought. Blowing up spectacularly in the Milton Keynes marathon proved there was no way I was going to get under three hours on MAF alone... I needed more tough workouts that would teach me to run quicker and longer on tired legs. So I did a bit of research and discovered the Hanson Marathon Method

18 successive days of running, averaging over 100km a week, really works for me. Just ran the toughish Yateley 10k, with a rare negative split and set a new PB of 36:34 chip time and finished 12th. Chuffed to bits. If I can keep this up I think I'll get a PB for both my half and full marathons this season.

Old Training and Racing Records

A couple of weeks ago I commented on Twitter (which published to Facebook) that I'd be gunning for a new 10k "personal best since returning" (PBSR) to running in the Shinfield 10k. My cousin "Liked" this and then followed up the next day asking how it went as this excerpt from Facebook shows:


My cousin has a fair point there, I shouldn't really be resetting my PBs, however my response did get me thinking... maybe I should dig out those old floppies and see if I can extract the data from the old application, Gotorun, to see what I could find.

2011 Running Season Off to a Good Start

In January I drew up a few goals for the year regarding the 5K distance, namely sub 19-min around about 2 April and then a sub 18-min 5K by the end of the year. Well, I think I was a little over-ambitious with these goals. The 2 April deadline came and went without a run. Problems on the home front meant there was no way I was going to be running that weekend, so I delayed my attempt. In training I soon realised I wasn't like to get sub 19-min this early in the season either, so I settled for around about 19:30 for the start of the season and we'll see how I get on from there.

Well, last Saturday I kicked off my 2011 season in fine form. It was a gloriously sunny day and I headed down the road for the Reading Parkrun

2010 in Summary

Diing doong diing dooong... diing doong diing dooong.. yes folks, Big Ben is starting to chime out 2010 and chime in 2011 so it's time for my annual summary of the year gone by.

This year started off with a bang with 9 inches of snow and then birth of my daughter. Sadly, this delight was soon turned to immense sadness as my little girl was born with a heart defect and sadly didn't make it through surgery. It was during the tough time of waiting for my daughter to grow big enough for surgery that I switched to predominantly running completely barefoot and I haven't looked back. I still go out for the occasional run in shoes of sorts, but most of my runs are now barefoot.
